IAAF president Lamine Diack believes it will be some time before athletics follows football by holding its biggest events in Africa.
The World Cup kicks off in South Africa in less than 200 days – the first time the competition will take place in the continent.
But when asked whether the IAAF had plans to hold a World Athletics Championships or a one-day Diamond League meeting in Africa, he replied: “It is still but a dream – it is not for tomorrow. Hopefully the opportunity will crop up.”
The IAAF hopes to bring more international exposure to athletics through the new Diamond League, which launches in 2010.
Meetings are scheduled for Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the United States, but none in Africa or South America, where the 2016 Olympics will take place in Rio de Janeiro.
