The US Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) league has closed down the 2009 regular season champions Los Angeles Sol.
The league took over ownership of the franchise last November when AEG gave up its stake, but negotiations for new owners fell apart at the end of last month.
WPS commissioner Tonya Antonucci said: “The league and our ownership committee worked incredibly hard over the past month to complete the transaction. In the end, we ran out of time and came up short of where we needed to be funding-wise for the Sol in 2010.”
The collapse of the team has led some to question the future of women's professional football in America.
