| Description |
The England and Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) Science & Medicine Department aims to “Optimise the availability and performance of England’s best players through the provision of cricket’s best science and medicine services.”
As part of this drive, the ECB is seeking applications from experienced Physiotherapists within sport. Reporting directly to the National Lead Physiotherapist, the post holder will join the England Test and One-day international team, working closely with the National Team Director to provide integrated support to the England Performance Squad.
You will need first-class clinical skills and extensive experience in the provision of Physiotherapy to elite athletes/high performing teams. Previous experience working within cricket is desirable. The successful applicant will have a proven track record of developing practitioners and working effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
You must have qualification and registration as a Chartered Physiotherapist, and preferably a post-graduate qualification in Sports Physiotherapy / Medicine. You should be flexible towards work schedules and willing to travel extensively abroad and within the UK.
The post holder will be predominantly based with the England Team and will also work at the National Cricket Performance Centre (NCPC), Loughborough University when not travelling with the team.
JOB DESCRIPTION
1. PURPOSE OF THE JOB
Lead the physiotherapy service for the England Test, One-Day International (ODI) and T20 squads.
The leadership, management, and clinical practice elements of the role will be focused on establishing and sustaining a competitive advantage for the England Team through innovative programmes that ensure England players are the best prepared in world cricket.
The post holder will be predominantly based with the England Team and will also work at the National Cricket Performance Centre (NCPC), Loughborough University when not with the Team.
2. ORGANISATION CHART
Whilst the England Team Physiotherapist reports primarily to the National Lead Physiotherapist, he or she also has a responsibility to report to the England Team Director with reference to the day-to-day delivery of physiotherapy services to the Team.
3. PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
• To act as primary physiotherapist to the England Test, ODI and T20 squads both during and between international series
• Work closely with England Team Coaches and Science & Medicine support staff to design and implement integrated injury prevention and management programmes
• Performance manage the England team massage therapist and other therapy practitioners associated with the England Team e.g. Occupational therapist
• Attend quarterly Medical Panel meetings at the National Cricket Performance Centre (NCPC) to review all centrally contracted and incrementally contracted players and any matters arising
• Using the established communication protocols, ensure the formal handover of information to club Physiotherapists and S&C; coaches relating to England players injury risk reduction and S&C; programmes when entering and leaving periods with England teams
• Adhere to all ECB injury surveillance reporting / database requirements
• Provide support to the CMO, MO with the team and England Team Director to prepare media statements on injured players. The England Team Physiotherapist will not be expected to directly answer media questions nor make (official or unofficial) statements to the media relating to injured players.
• Undertake appropriate professional development to keep abreast of world’s best practice.
• At all times liaise closely with the National Lead Physiotherapist and CMO, and be prepared to undertake any other duties related to the work of these functions including overseas travel for extended periods of time.
4. NATURE AND SCOPE OF JOB
a) Job Context
The aim of the ECB Science & Medicine Department is to optimise the availability and performance of England’s best players through the provision of cricket’s best science and medicine services.
The England Team Physiotherapist is responsible for the delivery of integrated physiotherapy services to the England Test and ODI teams with the objective of minimising the impact of injury and illness on the availability and performance of England squads.

5. KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
Essential:
• Qualification and registration as a Chartered Physiotherapist
• Extensive experience in the provision of Physiotherapy services in elite sport
• Extensive experience of working in multidisciplinary teams, preferably in high performance sport
• Flexibility towards work schedules
• Willingness to travel extensively abroad and within the UK
• Excellent interpersonal and communications skills (including presentation skills)
• Computer literacy, including MS office (especially Excel), medical databases and performance analysis software
• Advanced on-field life support training within the past two years
• Full driving licence
Desirable:
• Post graduate qualification in Sports Physiotherapy / Medicine to Masters level
• Experience as a Team Physiotherapist in professional cricket, including implementing cricket-specific injury prevention or rehabilitation strategies
• Research and development experience in high performance sport, including injury prevention or rehabilitation strategies
• Experience in the preparation and delivery of CPD workshops and conference presentations
• Advanced information technology skills
Due to the requirements of this role and the responsibilities assigned to the post holder, successful applicants will undergo a screening process that will include an Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau Disclosure. Having a criminal record will not necessarily prevent appointment.
