Basle to profit from loan deal

The parliaments of Swiss half-cantons Basle-Town and Basle-Country voted by overwhelming majorities to take out loans totalling CHF15m for activities linked to UEFA EURO 2008?.
Opening game
Basle will be the principal Swiss venue during next summer?s finals, hosting six matches which include the opening game on 7 June, two group matches featuring Switzerland, two quarter-finals and the first semi. St. Jakob-Park is located directly on the canton border, which is why the half-cantons will divide the costs to public authorities by a ratio of two-thirds to one-third.
Fan zones
The Basle-City parliament approved the borrowing of CHF9.6m by a 76-13 majority in a vote, while Basle-Country endorsed the borrowing of ?5.58m (57-26). The money will be used for measures such as security and transport, in addition to marketing activities to promote the city and region. The loans will also cover the costs associated with the establishment of fan zones in Basle and neighbouring communities.
