Lakers owner willing to sell club

Doncaster Lakers chairman and owner John Wright says he is willing to sell the club as long as the right offer comes along.

The National League One side could go into a Company Voluntary Arrangement after suffering big financial problems.

"I intend to sort out the mess, which I allowed to happen, by going through with a CVA so anyone taking over starts with a clean sheet," he said.

"Anyone taking over will get all those costs I incurred when moving grounds."

Wright said he expected to be reimbursed for the money he had spent on features such as fitting out the club shop and offices, but as it would cost him £50,000 to go into a CVA, he would not make any money out of it.

The club, formerly known as Doncaster Dragons, used to play at Belle Vue.

They changed their name in 2005 when they agreed to move to the £32m Keepmoat Stadium, then known as the Lakeside Community Stadium, which they share with Doncaster Rovers Football Club.

Their opening game at their new 16,000-seater ground was a friendly against Sheffield Eagles on 27 December 2006, drawing a crowd of 5,400.

But since then they have only recouped an average of £3,000 from three of their four home games so far, despite spending £100,000 on promotion and marketing.

Wright appealed to the people of Doncaster to come out and support their local team at the turnstiles for Sunday's game against Whitehaven.

"We have given away a lot of free tickets since that Sheffield game as part of our marketing strategy and I am hopeful that those people who benefited will give the club their support when it is needed," he said.

"Some season ticket holders have also said they would pay on the turnstile to help, so I am hopeful of a good income to help put the club back on track."
