2007 ISAF Sailing World Championships: Tracking system successfully tested

The ?Tracking? system was successfully tested during the Portuguese National Snipe Championship on the 29 April. This which will enable users to track and follow the Medals races of the 2007 ISAF Sailing World Championships live online during the event which is taking place between 28 June and 13 July in Cascais.
Mark Richards, from the British Company Traxu, explained how the system works: ?We put GPS on the boats and the buoys. Signals are transmitted via GPRS and will be both shown live and as a replay, on the official championship site. The fact that there is a replay function will allow us to see the regattas again up to two months after the end of the competition?, said Richards.
The margin of error concerning the pinpoint of the position of the boats will be minimal and the weight of the equipment will not affect the performance of the racing vessels. ?For the Sailing World Championships the range of positioning error will not exceed 3 metres. The equipment weights 150 grams and will be fitted in accordance with the design of each class?, added Richards.
The public will thus have access to information practically in real time: ?The buoys transmit signals every 60 seconds, the boats every 5 seconds and the updating of the site will be carried out automatically every 7 seconds?, concluded Mark Richards.
