Caborn Urges Premier League to Embrace Football Reform

U.K. sports minister Richard Caborn said England's Premier League must participate in European football reform or face legislation that may curb the commercial power of elite clubs, the Financial Times reported.
European sports ministers and national associations are pushing to make sport exempt from European Union rules that encourage free markets and open competition, the FT said. Central to their concerns is the dominance of rich clubs in the transfer market, the newspaper said.
``There are storm clouds gathering on Europe's skies,'' the FT cited Caborn as saying in an interview. ``Unless you get in there and influence what is being proposed then you could well be the recipient of much stricter legislation of things that go against you.''
Elite clubs such as Chelsea and Manchester United are opposed to the changes, which would limit the number of overseas players in their squads, the FT said. Competition organizers including the Premier League also argue that the plans will cede control to organizations such as European football body UEFA.
