The National Hockey League Players Association fired Executive Director Ted Saskin two months after he was suspended with pay amid allegations that he improperly read union members' e-mails.

The announcement followed an afternoon telephone conference call yesterday among NHL player representatives. The union, which gave no reason for the termination of Saskin, said in a news release that its Executive Board also ``is considering its options with respect to'' senior director Ken Kim.

The Toronto Star, citing an unnamed player who participated in the call, reported that the union said Saskin was fired with cause, meaning the players association would have to pay him about $1 million. Saskin had $6 million left on his contract, according to the Globe & Mail of Toronto.

The NHLPA placed Saskin and Kim on leave after reports in Canadian newspapers that they accessed the private e-mail accounts of players who opposed their hiring two years ago.

Saskin was hired in July 2005 to replace Bob Goodenow, who resigned shortly after the NHL and the players agreed on a labor contract to end the lockout that wiped out the 2004-05 season.

Saskin has denied personally accessing players' e-mails. A report from a lawyer hired by the union to investigate the allegations said Kim accessed the e-mails, then reported what he learned to Saskin.

The report, obtained by the Star, said the e-mails were secretly read over a 17-month period ``principally in aid of Mr. Saskin's personal interests.''
