Leon Douglas elected BADMINTONscotland President

BADMINTONscotland have a new President. Leon Douglas (Adambrae, West Lothian) was unanimously elected yesterday at the Annual General Meeting in Stirling.
He succeeds J Stuart Paterson (Glasgow) and starts his two years in office just in time for the World Team Championships in Glasgow from June 11 -17.
Former Scotland internationalist and World Badminton Championships team manager Christine Black (Edinburgh) was elected senior vice-president with Karen Stalker (Dunfermline) junior vice-president.
Douglas, 52, was born in Edinburgh and is a graduate of Edinburgh University.
He is a writer/researcher and is also heavily involved in the Arts, being an Executive Trustee of International Opera Trust since 1985.
His wife, Lesley, is head of Mary Erskine School in Edinburgh and they have two children ? Leon, 24, a doctor at Ninewells in Dundee and Emma, 22, who is doing the final year of her business/law degree at Edinburgh.
Douglas has been a badminton player since the age of 14 and has a heavy involvement in the administration of the sport.
He was a successful junior international and has also made his mark in veterans badminton in partnership with Scotland coach Dan Travers. They have won 2 European and One World Title together.
With his election as President, he will now surrender some of his key roles such as editor of the BADMINTONscotland magazine and chair of the International Match and Tournament Committee.
Douglas said: ?I am looking forward to my term in office. With just four weeks to the start of the World Team Badminton Championships and with this being the Centenary year of the Scottish International Championships it is an exciting time for Scottish badminton.?
Outside the sport his main interests are music in general, and opera in particular, reading, especially history, and philately.
His big non-badminton claim to fame was appearing on the same stage as Placido Domingo in an Edinburgh Festival production of Carmen.
