ICC President Is Critically Ill

Percy Sonn, president of the International Cricket Council, is critically ill in a South African hospital, his personal assistant said.
Sonn, 57, went into a hospital near his Durbanville home for an operation last week and was transferred into an intensive care unit on May 16 after complications set in.
“We’re hoping he’s going to recover but it looks quite serious,”George Hector said in a phone interview, without disclosing details of Sonn’s illness.
Sonn, who began his two-year term as ICC president last year, agreed in March to stay on until 2009 because cricketing nations were split over who should succeed him. Asian countries are promoting Indian board chief Sharad Pawar for the role, while countries including England and Australia want David Morgan, England & Wales Cricket Board chairman, to take over.
Sonn made his career in South African cricket administration, serving as president of the country’s national board for three years until 2003. He was appointed ICC vice-president in 2004 before becoming the Dubai-based organization’s sixth president.
The ICC has come under heavy criticism in recent weeks since the seven-week Cricket World Cup in the West Indies slumped as a spectacle. Only 11 per cent of players polled by the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations rated the event better than average, while 87 per cent said it was too long.
