Having helped Dortmund prepare for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, Gerd Kolbe has advised UEFA EURO 2008™ organisers in Innsbruck to treat all visiting fans like VIPs.
‘State visit’
Head of the organising committee in Dortmund, Kolbe told a group of 150 local business leaders in Innsbruck - including EURO organiser Christoph Platzgummer and parliamentary representative Hannes Bodner - how his city had prepared for last summer’s finals.
He said: “We welcomed tourists as if they were on a state visit and tried to ensure that everyone who came had a once-in-a-lifetime experience at the World Cup.”
Kolbe has been impressed with the progress his Austrian hosts have made in advance of their UEFA European Championship: “A lot of World Cup host cities dreamt of having an amphitheatre-like setting for their public viewing areas, like you already have at Bergisel.”
