The Abuja 2014 Commonwealth Games Bid Information and Publicity Sub-Committee is asking for the media to support Abuja’s efforts to win its bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games for the country, reports an African website.

The Commonwealth Games Evaluation Commission will be in Abuja June 4 to 8 to assess the technical aspects of the bid and will hold meetings with bid committee officials.

Mitchell Obi, Chairman of the sub committee said, “we have something to celebrate. The nation will be 100 years as a sovereign entity by 2014. There is, therefore, urgent need for Nigerians from all walks of life to rally behind the bid, which as we can see is more than sports.

“After the London presentation of the bid documents we have decided to consolidate on the gains of that visit. Abuja has some of the necessary infrastructure for the Games already in place. It is a serious bid and we want people to see it that way.

“The London presentation was brilliant. Abuja gained respect in the eyes of all and the Evaluation Commission will want to have a first hand feel of the Abuja spirit. The Africanness that we have brought to the bid cannot be denied, it is unique and only an African bid can muster that.

“It was wrong for some people to diminish the bid by playing down the African angles to it. We have to play those up because they are true. Africa has not hosted the Games before now, has it? Abuja has some of the facilities ready, that too is true”.

Obi called the Evaluation Commission’s visit “…an important visit. Only one day of the visit will be spent on looking at the facilities. The others will be used to evaluate the bid by holding the sessions with bid officials to explain the various sides of the bid document”, he said.
