Vancouver 2010 Opponent To Speak On Games Impact

The Canadian Press reports David Eby, a lawyer for an anti-poverty legal group, has been invited to Geneva in mid-June to speak to the Centre on Housing Rights and Evictions, a UN-funded housing rights agency, on the impact of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games on Vancouver’s poor.
His presentation will reportedly be part of a larger workshop on the centre’s two-year study on the impact of international events, especially the Olympic Games, on housing rights. The study will be released June 14 and Eby is speaking June 14 and June 15.
Eby says he’ll try to provide a comprehensive report on Vancouver’s progress, “or lack of progress” on the issue.
Anti-poverty groups have been demonstrating against Vancouver 2010 organizers who say that poor residents on the Downtown Eastside will be displaced by Games-related development.
