Madrid 2016 bid officials issued a press release Monday unveiling a public contest to select the logo that will promote and represent Madrid’s bid for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. The contest is open to every citizen, from children to professional artists.

During a press conference following the meeting Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon, Mayor of Madrid, said that the participation of all citizens is going to be one of the bid’s cornerstones, as well as the participation of “all the political parties, the public administrations, the Royal Family and the representatives of the civil society”.

The Mayor added, “we all feel very proud of the hard work that was put into the previous bid, this new project is different and new, so we are going to work even harder with the hope that, in October 2009 in Copenhagen, the City of Madrid will be awarded the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games”.

The contest will be in three phases leading to the election of the final winner, who will receive a prize of 30,000 Euros. During the first phase the ten best designs will be selected. In the second phase three finalists will be selected by popular vote. A jury panel formed from Madrid 16 Foundation representatives and specialists in marketing and communication will choose the winning design, which will be submitted for the approval of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Spanish Olympic Committee.

According to Madrid 2016, details of the designs must be inspired by the fact that Madrid’s Olympic Games would be based on the social integration and coexistence of the different cultures and countries. In order to achieve the target the submitted designs can reflect historical, geographical, or traditional characteristics of the city and Spain, but harmonizing them with the values of the Olympic movement.
