Vienna has unveiled its transport concept for the finals of UEFA EURO 2008™ with local officials promising to "provide perfect transport" for all visitors.

Perfection promised
Deputy mayor Grete Laska was proud to report the Austrian capital, which will host the final itself, had worked hard on getting things right. "In the first phase we had to refurbish the Ernst Happel Stadium and then we focused on the transport concept," Laska said, adding: "We'll be able to provide perfect transport not only for the 55,000 ticket holders travelling to matches but also for countless fans without tickets. Vienna is well-versed in staging big events like the Danube Island Festival which sees three million people use the public transport network in the space of three days."

Focal points
The transport concept focuses around the stadium and the Fan Zone with Rudolf Schicker, the city councillor responsible for town planning and transport, saying: "We want the European Championship to be a great event for Vienna which is why our transport planning has been going at full steam for two and a half years. Our transport planners are confident that we're going to enjoy a football festival."

'Welcome Points'
Public transport operator Wiener Linien will offer a combination ticket allowing match ticket holders to travel on its network for a period of 36 hours. There will also be ticket offers from Austria's national railway company. All stations in Vienna and the airport will install 'Welcome Points' which Wiener Linien managing director Michael Lichtenegger said would "welcome fans as soon as they arrive and provide them with information at the same time".

Station innovation
Lichtenegger was extremely proud of the new Stadion station built at the Ernst Happel Stadium, calling it a "masterpiece". "It has been designed with three tracks and two platforms in the middle which allows us to lay on extra trains without any problems," he said. "We have had experts from abroad visiting us every day to look at this station."
