Berne says yes to EURO

The citizens of Swiss host city Berne have approved plans to spend EUROS 3.4m of public funds in implementing their UEFA EURO 2008™ campaign after a referendum.

The decision means that the fan zones, transport plans, marketing and project organisation in Berne will all be paid for from the public coffers. Of the 42.22 per cent of the city's population who turned out to vote, 52 per cent voted in favour of the move. Berne mayor Alexander Tschäppät is now eager for plans to progress quickly, saying: "We allowed our citizens to vote on the plans and now it's time to go full steam ahead in preparation for UEFA EURO 2008™. The host cities have signed fair contracts with UEFA and we can't wait for the EURO." Three group games will take place at the Stade de Suisse Wankdorf on 9, 13 and 17 June 2008.
