Formula one hosting in 2009 a big boost to Indian sports

Delhi is all set to become the fifth Asian city to witness high-adrenaline rush, the screech and crunch of tyres and some serious drama, what with Formula One racing plan to go there in 2009. It all started with Ralf Schumacher, Suhel Seth and Vijay Mallya meeting Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit earlier this year to discuss plans to host F1 street racing at Rajpath.
However, the action was notched a few pegs higher when F1 racing boss Bernie Ecclestone showed interest in the Indian market. Indian Olympic Association followed it up and India became the fifth Asian country after Malaysia (Sepang International Circuit in Kuala Lumpur), Bahrain (Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir), Japan (Fuji Speedway in Oyama) and China (Shanghai International Circuit in Shanghai) that will host F1 racing with all the works. Says Suresh Kalmadi of the IOA, "It's a matter of pride for the nation and a big step towards placing India as a true sporting destination."
But after the celebrations are over, IOA will be left with a mammoth task, and a need for finances up to Rs 500-600 crore. As German architect Herman Tilke, who was in the city recently to study Rajpath for laying down street racing infrastructure, says, "When I came and studied the track in Delhi, I was confident that street racing can be held on it. But, as far as laying down a track and making a proper stadium for Formula One is concerned, it takes serious commitment. The track in Bahrain took two years and Rs 600 crore, so one needs time and finances both."
Suhel Seth, who was a part of the street racing initiative, isn't too impressed with the recent developments. "I really don't know what has triggered the IOA's move. I think the organisation should focus on the Commonwealth Games rather than taking up this daunting task."
However, Kalmadi is nonchalant. "There is no reason why we should not be able to manage F1 racing infrastructure by 2009. Also, whoever is a lover of motor sports is welcome to be onboard," he says.
And as Mallya says, "If the IOA is ready to invest money, then I don't think there should be any problem. I want India to have F1 and I will support the IOA."
