MacPhail Hired as Orioles' Baseball Operations Chief

Andy MacPhail was hired as president of baseball operations by the Baltimore Orioles and said he would continue negotiations with Joe Girardi to be the team's new manager.
MacPhail, whose father, Lee, was general manager of the Orioles from 1958 through 1965, said a position with Baltimore has interested him since he was a child.
``This is something that's always had a lot of appeal for me,'' he said at a news conference that was carried on Major League Baseball's Web site.
Lee MacPhail later was president of the American League.
Andy MacPhail, 54, quit as the Chicago Cubs' president in October after the club finished with the worst record in the National League. He won two World Series titles with the Minnesota Twins.
The Orioles fired Sam Perlozzo as manager two days ago and appointed coach Dave Trembley as interim manager. They have opened negotiations with Girardi, a former Cubs catcher who was named National League Manager of the Year last season after being fired by the Florida Marlins.
MacPhail said today that he was ``very impressed'' with Girardi, who works as a baseball analyst with the Yankees Entertainment & Sports Network in New York.
``How things will unfold, and when exactly, I don't know,'' MacPhail said. ``The interview did go well.''
Baltimore ranks last in home runs and second-to-last in runs scored in the American League. Relievers have blown 11 save opportunities, the fourth most in the league.
MacPhail's grandfather, Larry MacPhail, pioneered night baseball as the owner of the Cincinnati Reds in 1935. He later held roles as chief executive for the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Yankees.
Larry and Lee MacPhail are members of the Baseball Hall of Fame.
