PyeongChang 2014 To Spend over £300m in “Smart” Technology

The Ministry of Information and Communications is to grant 600 million won (£325m) in state funds for an “ubiquitous” technology system for ski resorts that will allow computers to be placed everywhere for the convenience of visitors, should PyeongChang host the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, reports a Korean website.
The new technology will cover every detail of the 2014 Winter Games, from weather reporting to heavy security.
An advanced information technology system will be in place by the end of 2007 at Yongpyong resort, the proposed venue for alpine skiing.
There will be additional mobile base stations equipped with high tech HSPDA and WiBro systems, together with additional satellite service and a variety of fixed and wireless service to assure stable connection for the athletes and visitors. A system to identify radio frequency and sensors, known as RFID/USN, will also be used.
The new technology would include tags with RFID to make entry and exit to the Olympic Village more secure. Environmental information will be provided around the clock, including the daily weather, temperature, amount of snowfall, wind direction and speed.
PyeongChang officials would install sensors at ski slopes, which would detect every motion and determine the scores for each athlete. With the technology round-the-clock service would be provided to the athletes and staff needing information on scores or the locations of facilities.
Customized services include sports information, accommodation, transport, ticketing, media and medical services to be available on mobile devices as well as through computers and interactive television. PyeongChang 2014 says the media in particular would benefit by having access to competition data whenever and wherever they need it.
Another advantage of the Olympic Ubiquitous system will be the enhancement of the spectator experience through improved, more dynamic broadcast content for those at the Games and viewers around the world, according to PyeongChang 2014.
Kim Jin-sun, Governor of Gangwon Province and Executive President of PyeongChang 2014 said, “the Olympic Ubiquitous technology concept would provide considerable benefits to all those who participate in the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, including the Olympic Family, athletes and spectators both near and far. If the Games are held in PyeongChang we believe the exciting new broadcast coverage would really help boost the popularity of winter sports”.
Once the Games are over the Ubiquitous technology system would be transferred to future host cities for the further benefit of the Olympic Movement.
