The first UEFA EURO 2008™ Broadcast Partner Workshop, organised by UEFA Media Technologies SA and staged in Vienna, proved to be a great success as broadcast rights-holders received their first formal introduction to the services planned for next summer's final tournament.

First time
For the first time in the history of the UEFA European Championship UEFA will provide the television signal and production for the tournament itself. In total, thirty-seven broadcast partners - including TF1 and M6 from France, ERT from Greece, NOS from the Netherlands, ESPN from the United States and PCCW from Hong Kong - accepted the invitation to Vienna where they were welcomed by UEFA's General Secretary David Taylor, UEFA's marketing and media rights director Philippe Le Floc'h, UEFA EURO 2008™ SA chief operating officer Martin Kallen and UEFA Media Technologies SA CEO Alexandre Fourtoy.

Experienced team
The two-day workshop started on 21 June with the UEFA Media Technologies chief executive leading proceedings. It was the first time UEFA Media Technologies had met with the broadcast partners and the 100 plus attendants heard presentations from all relevant divisions in the course of the workshop. The broadcast partners quickly realised UEFA had assembled an experienced team ready to deal with all their requests. Various broadcast partners later said they felt very comfortable with the UEFA team as the complete Host Broadcast Operations crew consisted of people they had worked with at previous major events such as the FIFA World Cup, the Olympic Games or previous UEFA European Championships.

Partnership approach
Joachim Wildt, head of UEFA Media Technologies Partner Services, added that UEFA would be looking for a "true partnership" with the broadcasters. "We don't just call all of the broadcasters that have agreed terms broadcast partners for nothing," he said. "We want a true partnership with them and we want to develop the relationship. We have told them what we can offer but we are also very flexible and want to hear what our broadcast partners need so that we can refine our approach. Our broadcast partners appreciate this and the feedback we have received is very positive. We are delighted with the outcome of this workshop."
