Samaranch Says 2008 Beijing Olympics Will Be Best in History

The 2008 Beijing Olympics will be the best Summer Games in history, according to Juan Antonio Samaranch, the former president of the International Olympic Committee.
``I believe the coming 2008 Beijing Olympics will be the best ever on record,'' Samaranch said in the Chinese capital yesterday at the opening of the World Olympics Collectors Fair. ``I'm very happy to say that.''
Samaranch championed Beijing's bid for China's first Olympics near the close of his 21-year tenure as IOC president that ended in 2001. This was the 86-year-old Spaniard's second visit to China in 15 months.
Beijing is using the Olympics to transform the city and improve living standards, with a $65 billion overhaul that includes a new airport terminal, subway lines and roads.
The staging of the Olympics will benefit China as it continues its economic expansion, Samaranch said.
