FIFA pays £10m compensation to Newcastle for Owen injury

Newcastle agreed to an offer of 10 million pounds ($20 million) compensation from soccer's governing body FIFA and England's Football Association for an injury sustained by Michael Owen at last year's World Cup, the Guardian and the Telegraph said.
Owen missed most of last season with a knee problem he picked up against Sweden while on international duty. In the absence of the 27-year-old, Newcastle spent 10 million pounds on signing Obafemi Martins.
FIFA and the F.A. paid 50,000 pounds of Owen's 103,000 pounds weekly wage while he was out, totaling around 2 million pounds, the Guardian said.
Newcastle also asked for compensation for signing Martins and Owen's medical bills, the paper added.
