PyeongChang 2014 announces that construction work at the Alpensia Resort in PyeongChang is “progressing rapidly” and is now 40 per cent complete ahead of the grand opening in October 2008.

Kim Jin-sun, Governor of Gangwon Province and Executive President of PyeongChang 2014, visited the construction site with bid committee officials prior to leaving for the International Olympic Committee session in Guatemala where the 2014 Winter Games city will be elected.

The Alpensia Resort, the heart of PyeongChang’s 2014 bid, is a new concept large-scale sports complex covering almost five square kilometres including a winter sports zone, accommodation and a golf village, which PyeongChang 2014 says is designed to the highest specifications.

If PyeongChang wins the bid, the resort will host the biathlon, ski jumping, cross-country, and luge/bobsleigh/skeleton events. It will also be the location for the Opening and Closing ceremonies, the Main Press Center, the International Broadcast Center, as well as “high quality apartments designed to fit into the beautiful natural surroundings”.

The biathlon venue will be ready to host an IBU World Cup event in 2008, and the IBU World Biathlon Championships in 2009. The Alpensia Resort will also host the annual Dream Program, which provides winter sports training opportunities for young people from all over the world.

Kim said while touring the construction site, “I am delighted to see that construction work at Alpensia Resort is progressing on time and on budget. Alpensia will help make PyeongChang the winter sports hub of Asia. Yangyang International Airport is only 40 minutes from PyeongChang and hundreds of millions of people could reach here within two hours’ flying time. We will endeavour to explain to the IOC in Guatemala how the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in PyeongChang in 2014 could drive the expansion of winter sports in Asia”.
