Experts praise Euro 2008 security plans

A multinational commission of policing experts has given a positive assessment to the Austrian and Swiss plans for security at UEFA EURO 2008™.
Site visits
The commission, made up of high-ranking police representatives from Europe's largest footballing nations, reviewed Austria's plans during a trip to Vienna in May and then inspected Switzerland's arrangements in the city of Solothurn in June. Christoph Lipp, who is responsible for international security matters at major events in Germany, said: "I was satisfied to see that Switzerland and Austria are well on course to organising a joyful international football festival."
EURO experience
The security experts had experience in policing at the 1996, 2000 and 2004 UEFA European Championships as well as last summer's 2006 FIFA World Cup, and praised the host nations for making their security plans public. The experts also confirmed that Austria and Switzerland would be able to call on support and cooperation from their counterparts across Europe when it came to ensuring a safe and trouble-free tournament.
Collaborative effort
Lipp said: "The foundation for a peaceful UEFA EURO 2008™ has been laid out through close international police cooperation as well as the cooperation of all national partners in the security field, experts in specific areas, uniformed foreign police officials and other foreign agencies." Euro 2008 SA security chief Martin Jäggi added: "The preventative measures which proved effective during the World Cup in Germany will also be used at UEFA EURO 2008™."
