UK Sport reacts to Government changes

Sue Campbell, Chair of UK Sport, has paid tribute to out-going Sports Minister Richard Caborn and welcomed other changes the Government has announced today as reflecting “how significant both sport and the winning of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games have become”.
The changes made by new Prime Minister Gordon Brown see Tessa Jowell replaced by James Purnell as Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. Jowell is to become the newly-created Minister for the Olympics, London and the South East.
“The new positions that the Prime Minister has announced reflect how significant both sport and the winning of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games have become over the past few years,” said Campbell. “We look forward to working with a new Secretary of State, James Purnell, as we seek to deliver a truly world class high performance system in this country in the build up to and beyond 2012. And it is right that Tessa Jowell, who did so much to help bring the Games to London, retains a central role in its delivery.”
Meanwhile, Richard Caborn has stepped down as Sports Minister and is to take up a new role as Gordon Brown's World Cup Ambassador working on the bid to land the 2018 World Cup.
“After six years of representing sport we would also want to pay tribute to Richard Caborn, whose passion and enthusiasm was a major driver of the positive change we have seen to the sporting landscape over the past couple of years in particular,” said Campbell. “We wish him well in his new role in football, and look forward to working with the incoming Minister to continue to drive sport up the political agenda.”
A replacement for Richard Caborn is yet to be announced.
