TV Boost For World Team Badminton Championships

THE 10th World Team Badminton Championships at Scotstoun International Sports Arena in Glasgow proved a huge success, with major television markets across three continents witnessing China's sixth Sudirman Cup triumph as the week-long tournament came to a rousing climax on Sunday 17 June.
The finals were screened live in the United Kingdom, Russia, China, India, Indonesia, Singapore, Denmark, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Thailand while the United States and Japan were among others who enjoyed delayed screening.
SkySports screened four days of live action from the Championships for UK fans while BBC Scotland offered a highlights programme on the Monday following the Championships. And an estimated half a billion TV fans around the world saw the finals.
BADMINTONscotland Chief Executive Anne Smillie, who was also the tournament director, said today: "We are delighted badminton continues to attract viewers in new markets such as USA, Russia and Japan.
"Our investment in quality host broadcasting keeps standards high for other major events hosted by Glasgow."
The success of the Championships was vital to Glasgow's bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games and Smillie added: "The Sudirman Cup was a great success and, as badminton is a key sport in the Commonwealth Games, we hope our contribution will be a telling factor when the choice between Scotland and Nigeria is made in November."
The global TV coverage wasn't the only success story from the Championships. The 500 players from 48 nations taking part in the Sudirman Cup on its second visit to Glasgow voted the event an overwhelming hit.
Bobby Milroy, President of the International Players' Federation, said: "Scotland has a strong tradition of hosting World Class badminton events but the organisers of the 2007 Sudirman Cup set a new standard of excellence this time round. The organization was as close to perfect as any event in recent memory and we, the players, are grateful for that experience."
