Tokyo's bid for the 2016 Olympic Games has unveiled its new representative logo, a Japanese MUSUBI knot that integrates the five colours of the Olympic rings and is used in Japan at times of celebration.

The logo was unveiled at the Tokyo International Forum by the Governor of Tokyo, Shintaro Ishihara, who was joined by Tsunekazu Takeda, President of the Japanese Olympic Committee and Dr. lchiro Kono, Chairman & CEO of the Tokyo 2016 Olympic Games Bid Committee and other bid officials in a ceremony for over 200 guests and media.

"This logo, our MUSUBI knot, integrates the values that underpin both the Olympic Movement and Tokyo 2016. It ties fogether sport and culture, urban and natural environment, Japan and the world, the world and peace" said the bid CEO Dr. Kono

He also suggests that the Musubi knot represents the bringing together of old venues from the Tokyo 1964 Games with new venues necessary to develop sport in Japan in the 21st century.

Tokyo's bid logo was selected from among 18 entrants in a national competition of designers and will be used during their bid campaign until June 2008. If Tokyo is selected to the short list, they will need to modify the logo to include the Olympic rings and change the words "applicant city" to "candidate city" for the duration of the campaign intil the election in October 2009.

Tokyo is the first 2016 bid to unveil an official logo. Chicago is in the midst of redesigning the logo that was used during their domestic campaign but cannot be used for the international campaign because it breaches IOC rules by including an image of a torch. Madrid's bid is currently holding a national competition to choose its logo.
