Abuja’s bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games got a boost Monday when the Federal Capital Territory announced that it has awarded a $841 million contract for the construction of a metro rail system to be completed in 2012, ahead of the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The announcement was made at a groundbreaking ceremony for the first phase of the project.
Once the rail system is completed it will have the capacity to transport 20,000 passengers per hour in any direction of the city.
President Olusegun Obasanjo urged all Nigerians to support Abuja’s bid saying the federal government is determined to bring the Games for the first time to “the black continent”.
