International boost for golf in Latin America and Caribbean

Professional golf in Latin America and the Caribbean received a significant boost on Monday when the region's governing body was welcomed into the International Federation of PGA Tours.
The Tour de las Americas (TLA), which has offices in Coral Gables, Florida and Caracas, Venezuela, has become an associate member of the Federation.
"We are very pleased to join the prestigious International Federation of PGA Tours," TLA commissioner Henrique Lavie said in a statement.
"The TLA has a bright future, as we work toward our goal of stimulating interest in the sport of golf in our region and helping to produce an increasing number of players of world-class quality.
"This new association with the Federation will only help us become an even more important part of the global golf scene."
PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said: "TLA continues to make significant strides in developing a very solid competitive schedule and is producing an increasing number of outstanding players."
The TLA joins the Canadian Tour as an associate member. The Federation's full members are the PGA Tour, European Tour, Asian Tour, Australasian Tour, Japan Golf Tour and South African Tour.
As an associate member, the TLA is eligible to host World Golf Championships events at venues within its region and can also suggest agenda items for consideration by the Federation's full members.
The TLA held 14 tournaments last year, attracting players from every country in Latin America and the Caribbean and also from the United States, Canada, Britain, Ireland, France, Sweden and Finland.
