Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Gets Financial Boost

The Evening Times reports that Glasgow is to get government funding of 4.5 million pounds which will cover almost a third of the cost of upgrading Scotstoun Stadium giving the city’s bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games a financial boost.
Communities and Sport Minister Stewart Maxwell announced the Glasgow 2014 bid committee will receive 4.5 million pounds via the national sports agency sportscotland.
Scotstoun’s existing facilities are being upgraded to a municipal stadium. It will continue to be used primarily for athletic events reports the newspaper, but there will be a provision for rugby. The stadium's backroom facilities will also be improved.
The upgrade will be completed in May 2008. It will host squash and table tennis if Glasgow wins the 2014 Commonwealth Games bid.
Meanwhile Commonwealth representatives from the Caribbean and American regions are in Glasgow touring the proposed venues for the Games, attending presentations, and meeting senior representatives from the Scottish Executive, Glasgow City Council and the Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland. They will also attend several social functions.
Visiting the city for four days are representatives from Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos, Canada, and the Falkland Islands.
First Minister Alex Salmonds is hosting a reception for the delegates.
