Olympic Host Selection May Rotate Among Continents, Rogge Says

The International Olympic Committee may rotate the Olympic Games around continents to enable countries in Africa and Latin America to stage the world's biggest multisports event, President Jacques Rogge said.
``We believe in the near future we can determine the host country under this rotating system,'' Rogge told the Web site of the Beijing Olympic Games Organizing Committee today. ``As of now, we haven't set a timetable for starting this system.''
No African or South American country has staged the Summer Olympics. Since winning the 2008 bid six years ago, Beijing has worked to improve its environment and transportation, Rogge said. The city is investing $65 billion in a new airport terminal, subway lines and roads ahead of next year's games, which will take place from Aug. 8-24.
Winning the games can allow host cities to speed up regeneration, Rogge said. London has the chance to redevelop a rundown part of the city in a sixth of the time it might otherwise take because of the 9.3 billion pounds ($19 billion) that will be spent staging the 2012 games, Paul Deighton, who heads the event's organizing committee, said July 27.
