Now that Salzburg lost its bid for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games to Sochi, Munich plans to prepare a bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympic Games
Munich’s potential 2018 Olympic bid will reportedly be a compact one with three sports clusters. To achieve a compact bid, traditional resorts such as Rhupolding for biathlon and Inzell for speed skating would be dropped.
Alfons Hoermann, President of the German Ski federation said, “the German winter sports federations see the candidature of Munich as a unique chance and support it unanimously”.
While the German Olympic Committee said it would bid for the Summer Olympics in the near future it is expected to give Munich’s Winter Games bid the nod in December.
Munich is said to spend up to 35 million euros on its 2018 bid.
