Japan Racing Association Halts Weekend Races After Flu Outbreak

All Japanese horse races this weekend were canceled following an outbreak of equine influenza among racehorses, the Japan Racing Association said.
The Tokyo-based association said in a statement that it tested 163 horses due to run tomorrow and Sunday and found that 29 had contracted flu.
Races scheduled for Niigata City, Kokura in Fukuoka Prefecture, and Sapporo in Hokkaido were all called off ``to avoid increase of secondary infection,'' the JRA said.
Equine influenza is very contagious and has an almost 100 percent infection rate in an unvaccinated population that has been previously unexposed to the virus, according to the Animal Health Trust's EquiFluNet Web site, which monitors instances of the disease.
