Disney's ESPN Buys Rugby News Web Site Scrum.com

Walt Disney Co.'s ESPN network, the most-watched U.S. sports channel, bought scrum.com, a rugby news and scores Web site, to attract fans ahead of the Rugby World Cup next month in Europe.
Scrum.com, founded in 1997, will complement ESPN's coverage of the world cup on cable television in Latin America and Australia, Bristol, Connecticut-based ESPN said today in an e- mailed statement. It didn't provide financial terms.
The purchase, following the start of soccer sites in French, German, Italian and Spanish, will add viewers and Internet users outside of the U.S. The network said this month it plans to offer live college and professional events to its ESPN360.com site.
Shares of Burbank, California-based Disney, the second- largest U.S. media company behind Time Warner Inc., rose 11 cents to $33.02 at 10:43 a.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. They had fallen 2.7 percent this year before today.
