Since triathlon made its Olympic debut in 2000, the sport has not only witnessed a huge increase in participation, but also in popularity. Nowhere is that more evident than through the International Triathlon Union’s new media initiatives.
Triathlon.org, the official website of ITU, has enjoyed 23.1 million page views so far in 2007, a 230% increase compared to this time last year. With a record number of athletes, totalling almost 8,000 expected at the 2007 Hamburg BG Triathlon World Championships in one week’s time, a number of unprecedented online and new media services will be offered by ITU.
“As the newest Olympic sports federation, we pride ourselves in using new media to help develop the sport,” said Loreen Barnett, Executive Director of the International Triathlon Union.
Triathlon.org will feature a number of services for athletes, media and fans including:
- Over 20 hours of live video coverage from all races
- Full live timing of all races
- Uniquely designed system where all age-group athletes can watch their race finish on demand
- Website dedicated to the world championships
Through a unique partnership with ESPN, all elite races will be jointly broadcast on ESPN360.com in the US and Mexico live and on demand for up to 30 days after the event. Triathlon fans can watch full length shows on Google videos from the BG Triathlon World Cup series as well catch action from the ITU’s youtube channel at www.youtube.com/itutriathlon.
As the Beijing Olympics near, the interest grows and more people around the globe are tuning into the live webcasts of the BG Triathlon World Cup series and other online services offered.
