China is to launch a special nationwide campaign Sept. 1 to Oct. 1, 2008, to check police behaviour ahead of the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympic Games China’s Ministry of Public Security announced Wednesday.

The campaign to strengthen police discipline and regularize law enforcement, will be spearheaded by Beijing and other co-host cities starting Sept. 1, followed by major tourist cities as of Jan, 1, 2008.

The campaign will focus on the behaviour and manner of police officers on duty, particularly in public places and where large-scale activities take places.

Inspectors will check the police officers – mainly community police, traffic police, and patrol police – to see how they behave when people ask for help and service. Smoking, eating food and chatting during working hours are regarded as a poor image of police and will be prohibited.

The management and use of police vehicles will also be checked during the campaign. Police vans must be equipped with licence plates and police signs, lights and alarms, and if the police are not on duty they must yield to the traffic rules.

Meanwhile Beijing 2008 has begun mailing out notification letters to everyone who has successfully submitted a ticket application informing them of his or her ticket purchase results.

The Beijing 2008 ticketing centre received 720,000 applications requesting 5.18 million tickets across the Chinese mainland and more than 300,000 people across the Chinese mainland successfully reserved more than a million tickets for the Games.

According to the ticketing centre as long as an applicant successfully submitted a ticket application the applicant will receive a letter either by post or e-mail with his or her individual ticket purchase results, and if applicable, the lottery ticket results.

Phase 1 ticket applicants are asked to check their mailboxes and e-mail for the notification letter, in the near future. BOCOG will begin deducting payments for the ticket purchase in mid-September and forfeited tickets will be sold during Phase 2 of tickets sales which begin in October.
