Wilma Shakespear to retire from English Institute of Sport

Wilma Shakespear has announced her retirement from the English Institute of Sport after six years as National Director. She is planning to return to her native Australia.
The EIS is at the heart of the delivery of sports science and medicine services to athletes in this country and the success of the network will be central to our ability to achieve our aspirational goals for London 2012 and beyond. Following the transfer of high performance responsibilities in 2006, UK Sport is now responsible for its funding and strategic direction.
UK Sport's Chief Executive John Steele said today:
"I would like to warmly congratulate Wilma on her achievements, and wish her all the best for her return to Australia. There is no doubt that she has achieved a great deal since she came over to head up the EIS six years ago.
"Her departure comes at a vital time for high performance sport in this country, as we seek to build a support system that will deliver the world class services athletes need not just through to 2012 but - crucially - beyond. Her successor therefore will play a central role in helping to build this sustainable network. I look forward to working with Steve Cram and his team at the EIS to ensure we find and recruit the best possible candidate."
