Japanese Government To Approve Tokyo 2016 Bid

The Japanese government decided Friday to formally approve Tokyo’s bid for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games at a cabinet meeting Tuesday. Officials say the approval will pave the way for the metropolitan government to formally file its candidacy later this month with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), assuring the capital of support from the central government.
At Tuesday’s meeting the Japanese Cabinet will also decide that the central government will pay up to half the costs for building major facilities for the Games, and require that new facilities to be built will be operated at local costs, said officials.
The Tokyo government hopes to run the 2016 Games for 17 days from August 12 to 28 and will build a new main stadium for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and track and field events in Chuo Ward’s Harumi waterfront district, reports Kyodo.
