Basle host city co-ordinator Hanspeter Weisshaupt is convinced that the city is well on course for hosting UEFA EURO 2008™ as kick-off draws ever closer.
Positive assessment
Funding from the two half cantons - Basle-Town and Basle-Country - has been approved while event managers for the local fan zone have been appointed. Weisshaupt said: "Even before I took up my position excellent work had already been done. Now we want to keep on informing people in the region to keep up the excitement in the run-up to UEFA EURO 2008™."
Security considerations
A detailed plan for security in the city is being finalised with talks being held with the police and army about bringing in extra personnel and equipment for the finals, including a proposal to enlist security staff from neighbouring Germany. "We're well on course with our timetable," said Rolf Meyer, the head of security for the finals. "We're ready for UEFA EURO 2008™."
Web presence
Sabine Horvath, co-director of the city's marketing agency, added that great work was being done on the fan zone for the finals, with Liestal - the capital of Basle-Country Canton, also setting up a host city zone. In addition, the city's finals website, www.euro08.basel.ch, is encouraging locals to take part in the volunteer and host family programmes. "These offers will continue to be expanded and will include an online media centre which will offer text, photos and videos," said Horvath.
Transport planning
Public transport planning is also well under way. The concept for transport in the city centre and the railway system is largely in place. Co-operation with all parties involved is progressing excellently, according to Jörg Jermann who is responsible for public transport in Basle during the finals. He said that he expects around 750,000 visitors to flock to Basle for the tournament.
