In recognition of the special attention it has given to raising awareness about protecting the ozone layer, the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) has received the Montreal Protocol Public Awareness Award, revealed Yu Xiaoxuan, Deputy Director of the BOCOG Construction and Environment Department, on Monday.

The Montreal Protocol Public Awareness Award is an Ozone Award through the United Nations Environment Programme that recognizes organizations and individuals who have done outstanding work in raising awareness about ozone depletion and who have made a global effort to address the problem.

BOCOG was one of only ten organizations and individuals to receive the honor. Other recipients included Air India and the United States Environmental Protection Agency's SunWise Program.

According to Yu, this honor shows the international community's approval of BOCOG's efforts to promote a "Green Olympics."

In bidding for the right to host the Olympic Games, BOCOG had promised to eliminate the use of ozone-depleting substances six years prior to the Montreal Protocol's target date of 2010. In 2004, BOCOG fulfilled that promise.

The Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer first came into effect on September 16, 1987, when 24 nations signed the agreement. At present, the Montreal Protocol covers 191 nations. Over the past 20 years, the combined efforts of these nations have successfully reduced 95 percent of ozone-depleting substances.
