Atkins picked to produce 2010 ceremonies

Organizers of the 2010 Winter Olympics said on Thursday that the Vancouver Games' opening and closing ceremonies will be produced by David Atkins, who oversaw the same spectacles for the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney.
Atkins, an Australian who was also creative director for ceremonies at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, was credited with avoiding traditional stereotypes about Australia during the Sydney ceremonies.
The opening and closing events for the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver will be held at B.C. Place, a 60,000-seat stadium in the Western Canadian city's downtown that is covered with a souffle-like inflated fabric roof.
It will mark the first time a Winter Olympics has had its ceremonial events in an enclosed facility.
Vancouver's sea-level downtown normally gets rain rather than snow during the winter, and organizers argue that holding the opening spectacle indoors will be easier on the athletes as they prepare to compete.
Sport events requiring snow will be held in the mountains overlooking the city and in the resort community of Whistler, British Columbia, which is about 120 km (75 miles) north of Vancouver.
