Director of Communications leaves FIFA

FIFA's Communications Director for the past five years, Markus Siegler (49), will be leaving football's world governing body at the end of September 2007, it was announced today. Markus Siegler, who was appointed to run FIFA's Communications Division after the 2002 FIFA World Cup™ in Korea and Japan, decided to leave the world body "as a friend and on good terms".
"We had a sound relationship based on trust and mutual respect throughout the years," said FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter. "We regret that Markus has decided to leave and wish him the very best for his future," he continued.
No immediate successor has been appointed. FIFA's present Head of Media, Andreas Herren, will be heading the Division "ad interim".
The Swiss, Markus Siegler, a journalist by trade, worked for FIFA as a consultant between 1 November 1995 and 30 April 2001 and on 1 May 2001 was hired as the Head of Corporate Communications, attached to the executive office of the President. In July 2002, he was appointed Director of the Division by the FIFA President and since then has been an Executive Director and a member of the FIFA management board.
Siegler commented: "Working for FIFA was exciting and rewarding. My decision to seek a new challenge was difficult and finally due to differing opinions about the future structure and direction, yet marked by mutual respect."
"FIFA is an exciting and dynamic organisation, presided over by a unique personality of international standing, which has given me a lot and deserves my deepest respect, recognition and gratitude," Siegler concluded.
