London 2012: Olympic Village legacy vision revealed

Plans for new homes, schools, healthcare and community facilities for east London were welcomed by the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) as the legacy vision for the Olympic Village was unveiled by preferred developers Lend Lease during the start of public consultation in Stratford.
New images show how the area is planned to look after the Games in 2012. The proposed legacy plans are centred on creating a new community next to the Olympic Park in the heart of east London. Approximately 4,000 homes will deliver vital housing for the future generations, much of it affordable, and new communities will be supported by new parks, public squares and open space; an education campus for all ages; healthcare and multi-use community facilities; and new transport links to transform the area into one of the best connected parts of the capital.
Lend Lease’s legacy masterplans went on display at a public exhibition in Stratford Circus to allow local residents to view and comment on the planning applications for the legacy elements of the Olympic Village.
A panel of 47 UK and international architectural practices, appointed by Lend Lease, will design the Olympic Village for Games time and legacy. The Olympic Village will accommodate 17,000 athletes and officials during the Olympic Games and 6,500 in the Paralympic Games. Accommodation for athletes will be no higher than the eighth floor, as stated in the Candidate File.
ODA Chief Executive David Higgins said:
“The 2012 Games are about more than a summer of sport, they are a catalyst for much wider regeneration so I welcome Lend Lease’s exciting plans for a new legacy community in the heart of east London. These plans for new homes, schools, healthcare and multi-use community facilities, all on the door step of one of the largest new urban parks in Europe for 150 years, will ensure that the legacy of 2012 lives on for generations.
“I encourage all local people to view these proposals and have their say on how we transform this part of east London.”
A planning application for the legacy masterplan for the Olympic Village has been submitted to the Olympic Delivery Authority’s Planning Decisions Team, an independent body responsible for processing all applications relating to the Olympic Park on behalf of the ODA’s Planning Committee, which includes Councillors from the four boroughs in the Olympic Park and externally appointed independent members.
Feedback received during public consultation will be considered before the Planning Committee issue their decision on the application, expected to be at the end of the year.
