Major League Baseball Sets Fourth Straight Attendance Record

Major League Baseball set an attendance record for the fourth straight season, with a week of games left to play.
Baseball drew more than 76.2 million fans this year through yesterday's games, breaking last year's mark of 76 million, the sport said in a statement. With seven days left in the season, baseball predicts total attendance will rise at least 4 percent from 2006 when the season ends Sept. 30.
The New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers are among the clubs that have set attendance records. The Yankees surpassed 4 million tickets sold for the third straight year and the Dodgers sold more than 3.76 million tickets.
Baseball attributes the increase to the wild-card providing more teams the opportunity to contend for the playoffs, new ballparks and inter-league play. The wild-card gives a playoff berth to the second-place team with the best record.
