2007 World Broadcaster Meeting opens in Beijing

The 2007 World Broadcaster Meeting, dedicated to seeking solutions to major topics and specific arrangements on Olympic broadcasting, opened in Beijing Thursday morning.
Addressing the meeting, Liu Qi, president of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG), said, "Since the beginning of this year, based on the Chinese Government's requirements and BOCOG's commitment in its Olympic bid, we are focusing on four areas in media services."
Liu said BOCOG officially implemented the Regulations on Reporting Activities in China by Foreign Journalists during the Beijing Olympic Games and the Preparatory Period, and, based on the Regulations, issued the Service Guide for Foreign Media Coverage of the Beijing Olympic Games and the Preparatory Period.
Meanwhile, Liu said, "one-stop" service has been offered at the Beijing Olympic Media Center. "Since launching the service more than three months ago, we have provided administrative review and approval services for over 30 media organizations, and advisory services for more than 300 cases."
During the Good Luck Beijing Sport Events -- the pre-Games events -- BOCOG also received a total of 136 local and foreign media organizations for interviews and reporting and 3,644 accredited journalists, he added.
Liu noted that with 316 days till the opening ceremony, BOCOG, as guided by the Olympic practices and its bid commitment, will continue to concentrate on the following five tasks:
1. Improve media service-related policies and procedures by studying the practical needs and practices of previous Games in reporting.
2. Continue liaison with the relevant government departments to further implement relevant regulations, policies and procedures.
3. Improve the "One-Stop" service offerings and format to provide the media with more efficient and practical services.
4. Better understand media services by drawing on our experiences at the Good Luck Beijing Sport Events and improve the Olympic media operation plan to provide "high-level" Games-time media services.
5. Complete construction of the relevant media facilities according to the master plan of the preparatory work for the Games.
The meeting, scheduled to end on September 28, is the third one in a row and also the last one before the Beijing Olympics. BOCOG and Beijing Olympic Broadcasting Co., Ltd (BOB) co-hosted the first two meetings in 2005 and 2006.
Nearly 120 representatives of the rights-holding broadcasters from around the world, including NBC (the National Broadcasting Company), EBU (European Broadcasting Union), ABU (the Asian-Pacific Broadcasting Union), and CCTV (China's Central Television) attended the meeting.
During the meeting, representatives reviewed a report by BOCOG in a number of areas, such as venue construction, competition arrangement, technical support, security, transport, accommodation, image and look, and media operations, as well as a presentation by BOB on broadcasting programs.
They also took an on-site tour of the Olympic central zone, visiting a number of Olympic venues that included the International Broadcasting Center (IBC) and the media village.
Present at the meeting were BOCOG executive vice-presidents, Liu Jingmin, Jiang Xiaoyu, Li Binghua and Tang Xiaoquan. The general manager of BOB, Manolo Romero, chaired the meeting.
Earlier, 130 EBU and 12 OTI members attended a meeting between EBU and OTI (the Iberoamerican Television Organization). The members also toured a few Olympic venues and were updated on the Olympic broadcasting progress. The two unions also held unilateral meetings with BOCOG and BOB.
The 29th Olympic Games will be held in Beijing from August 8 to 24, 2008. It is estimated that over four billion audience members around the world will follow the games through TV and radio broadcasting.
