IOC Member Praises Vancouver 2010 Venue

International Olympic Committee (IOC) executive member Gerhard Heiberg, speaking to the Richmond Chamber of Commerce at the Delta Vancouver Airport Hotel, praised Vancouver 2010 Olympic speed skating oval planners for having a post-Games plan after touring the venue Tuesday.
Heiberg said, “here everything is planned for the time after the Games and this is how it should be. We have seen a lot of venues where people have not thought too much about the legacy – what’s going to happen afterwards – and they lose a lot of money afterwards because they don’t know what to do with it” reports the Richmond Review.
Heiberg said he was impressed with Richmond’s focus on sport in its post-Games plan for the $178 million building, calling it “an eye-opener”.
Heiberg led the IOC commission which evaluated Vancouver’s 2010 bid.
As for a comment he made ahead of Vancouver winning the 2010 Games that the distance between Vancouver and Whistler is “too far”, Tuesday Heiberg said, “it’s not too far. It’s a little far”.
