Everett Washington-based newspaper the Herald quotes a British Columbia Tourism spokesman saying that the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games will also benefit and affect the American Northwest.

Raymond Chan, spokesman for Tourism British Columbia, said last week that some visitors will fly in to Washington airports. A county in Washington State, Snohomish County, has created its own group to help local businesses and organizations to be ready for the opportunities created by the Olympics. It’s trying to bid for skating or skiing teams to establish training camps in the county.

About a million people are expected to visit British Columbia during the games. Chan said, “it’s really a great opportunity to showcase our region to the world”.

Chan said organizers expect many Washingtonians and Oregonians to drive up the I-5 highway and spend time and money in British Columbia during the Games.

Beginning in the summer of 2008 the U.S. government is starting a new border-crossing rule requiring passports for all travelers when they re-enter the United States, even after only a few hours of shopping in Canada, although now a driver’s license suffices.

The Herald reports that Washington state Governor Chris Gregoire and British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell are trying to streamline the crossings in preparation for the Olympics. State officials plan to authorize new enhanced driver’s licenses which will allow drivers to cross the border without presenting passports.
