Olympic volunteers recruitment

The recruitment of 29th Olympic Games and 13th Paralympic Games will officially kick off on August 28, 2006.
This was announced by Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) at a mobilization meeting in Beijing on Friday. BOCOG's on-line application system and toll-free hotline will be in operation when the recruitment begins.
Qiang Wei, chief of Beijing Olympic Games Volunteer Work Coordination Group and deputy secretary of Beijing Municipal CPC (Communist Party of China) Committee made a key-note speech.
He encouraged the relevant departments to deliver a high-level performance for the recruitment of volunteers, while stressing the need to enhance organization and system build-up, as well strengthen cooperation and coordination.
The volunteer work should help promote other undertakings, including promotion of civility, humanistic concepts and social harmony, he said.
Chief of the office of the coordination group and top official of Beijing youth league Liu Jian dealt with the recruitment details.
About 800 people attended the meeting. They included: representatives of member organizations under the coordination group, representatives of other public organizations, specialized volunteers, leading officials involved in volunteer recruiting work in provinces and municipalities, officials in charge of the volunteer recruitment in co-host cities of the 2008 summer Games and BOCOG department chiefs.
Following is the information obtained from the office of the coordination group.
1. Definition of Games-time volunteers
Olympic and Paralympic Games-time volunteers refer to the volunteers who are recruited directly by BOCOG or recruited by other entrusted agencies. They will have Olympic accreditation, perform post-specific duties during the Games, work at the time and places designated by BOCOG, accept BOCOG's management and serve the Beijing Olympic Games without pay.
2. Sources of the Games-time Volunteers
It is estimated that around 70,000 and 30,000 Games-time volunteers will be needed for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, respectively.
They will mainly come from the universities in Beijing. Beijing residents, people of various ethnic groups from around the country, compatriots from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, overseas Chinese and foreign citizens are also welcome.
