Fifa agrees China broadcast deal
 13/11/2009

Fifa has signed a landmark five-year deal with China Central Television (CCTV) that will see the next two World Cups broadcast on the country’s national TV station.

CCTV was the media rights holder for the last two World Cups but this is the first time it has signed a long-term deal with football’s governing body.

As well as the 2010 and 2014 World Cups, CCTV will also show other Fifa events and tournaments, including the Women’s World Cup.

Fifa said that extending broadcast coverage of football in the world’s most populated country represents an important step forward in developing the game globally.

FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke said: “FIFA is delighted to have reached such a significant agreement with CCTV. We believe that this is the start of a long-term co-operation that will help to further strengthen football in China and make it even more popular.”

The agreement between FIFA and CCTV ensures that football will be broadcast free-to-air all over China.

CCTV is China national television station, with its 38 channels attracting more than a billion viewers throughout the country.
