Al Jazeera has reportedly bought six sports channels from Arab Radio & Television (ART) in a deal worth more than $1bn.
Rapid TV News claims that a preliminary agreement has been signed between the two broadcasters after a year of talks.
Al Jazeera will get the exclusive content from six ART channels as part of the deal, although it is not clear whether some of the minor Arab soccer leagues will be included.
Al Jazeera’s sports division already holds the exclusive rights in the region for major football leagues such as Italy’s Serie A, Spain’s La Liga and the UEFA Champions League.
The network’s eight sports channels also televise the top leagues in Brazil and Argentina, as well as the Olympics and other major events including the French Open and Masters Series tennis.
Al Jazeera bought the rights for the Champions League (2009 to 2012) this year, beating off competition from ART, Orbit and Showtime. The new deal is expected to make Al Jazeera the exclusive regional rights-holder of next year’s World Cup in South Africa.
